You may have hear the term “SOP” a time or two while searching for business information. SOP stands for standard operating procedure. In short, it is a written process for the steps that must be followed for work to be completed in your law firm. An SOP should be written with the standard case or client in mind, not the outliers.
An SOP should not be ever changing. Rather, it should be reviewed quarterly after implemented. Your team should be aware of the SOP and any changes to the SOP should be brought up in a quarterly meeting and taken very seriously. You do not want your team playing a game where the rules are ever changing. This will lead to burn out, dissatisfaction and low morale.
The two hardest part of this process are creating the SOP and implementing the SOP. A great deal of care should be given to the creation of the SOP. It is not something that can be easily thrown together. Keep in mind, you need a process for multiple areas of your business so it is not a one and done. Once your SOP is created then your team, and you, need to be trained on implementing it.
At Charted Consulting we specialize in creating and implementing SOPS for practice management. This is what happens to a client after they’ve become a client up to when the file closes. This process covers the legal work, who does it, how its done, when its done and so forth.
